□Burundi Coffee:
Burundi is a tiny and country member of the East African Community (EAC) and Great Lakes Area (GLA) countries.
Coffee is a key and backbone crop in Burundi. Coffee farmers, coffee dealers, the government and the rest of the population get profit from coffee. The majority of Burundians live directly or indirectly on coffee.
Burundi National Bank (BRB) gets 40% of foreign currency from coffee exportation. Forty per cent of Burundians live on coffee.
Arabica coffee has let and made Burundi be worldwide known because of its fruity and aromatic taste.
Coffee is grown in almost all provinces but Kayanza, Ngozi, Muyinga and Kirundo Provinces are among the best provinces that grow coffee of high quality. These provinces have rich soil and an average coffee altitude of between 1700 to 1950m from Tanganyika Lake level.
The Burundi government policy is to produce coffee of high quality. According to the research conducted by coffee experts; coffee consumers are more interested in quality than in quantity. The National coffee Regulation Authority (ARFIC) is working hard in to dissuade or discourage “Washed Coffee”.
Coffee liberalization has started since 2008 and now public and private sectors are both operating on the ground for better quality. The liberalization has created and brought the idea of competition. Even if, coffee has been liberalized; the government still monitors, supervises and regulates the coffee sector through its branch called ARFIC (Burundi coffee Regulation Authority). The ARFIC monitors, supervises and regulates coffee from the farms to the exportation.
Coffee prices have decreased in the five recent years which have discouraged some farmers to keep growing coffee.
They want to cull coffee plantations and replace coffee trees with other crops but the government didn’t and doesn’t cease to increase the farmers’ awareness about the importance of coffee. Destroying coffee fields or plantations is like destroying “Burundi culture”. Coffee and drums are significant things in Burundi culture. There is a link between the two elements (coffee and drums). Burundi is internationally for coffee quality and dance culture drums.
The ARFIC roasted coffee has been named “NGOMA Coffee” that means drums.
The government is building significant strategies to enhance the coffee productivity by encouraging washing station owners to give incentives and prizes to the farmers who produce and supply more and better coffee during the competitions (Prestige cup and Cup of Excellence.)
